Original Grouping. One-of-a-Kind. This is the tremendous uniform & field gear grouping of Robert J. Novak, Assault Platoon, Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 4th Marine Division. Novak was a Flamethrower with the 4th Marine Division during World War II. The grouping includes Novak’s uniform along with a photograph of him holding it, his Named KA-BAR Marine Corps knife, his UNIS Marked field gear, and more.
This phenomenal grouping includes:
- Novak’s Marine Corps Uniform Jacket bearing Corporal chevrons on both sleeves and a 4th Marine Division patch on the left shoulder, and EGA Enlisted collar insignia. There is a note in the pocket denoting Novak’s name and specific unit, that being the Assault Platoon of the HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. The belt is intact and the uniform is in great shape overall.
- Novak’s M1941 Marine Corps Haversack UNIS Marked on the front with a semi-circle and 421, for the HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. Dated 1943 by Boyt over USMC on the interior flap.
- Novak’s M1941 Knapsack (Lower Pack) UNIS Marked on the front with a semi-circle and 421, for the HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. Dated 1943 by Boyt over USMC on the interior flap.
- Modern photograph of Novak holding his uniform.
- Novak’s USMC Marked KA-BAR knife in its original sheath. The initials R.J.N. are carved into the leather washer grip, for Robert J. Novak. The knife and sheath both show heavy service use. The securing strap is intact but weak.
- Novak’s WWII Pistol belt with an attached First Aid Pouch marked on the front 424 for Company G, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, likely from when Novak was detached overseas or before being transferred to his primary company. Also included is an original Carlisle model bandage in the pouch.
- Novak’s heavy leather “gauntlet” gloves which are marked U.S.M.C. 11 for issue to the Marine Corps, Size 11. These were likely Novak’s flamethrower gloves.
The information we were given states that Novak lived in Michigan, but whether he was born there or moved there later, we cannot say. As the photo appears modern, we aren’t sure if Novak has passed yet, which may be why some of his records aren’t showing up. Definitely worthy of further research!
This is a really phenomenal WWII Marine Corps grouping with three amazing UNIS marked pieces of field gear, all identified to Flamethrower Robert J. Novak. There is definitely much more research to be done, making this a great project. Comes ready for further research and display.
