Original Item: One-of-a-kind. During World War Two there were only about 5,000 recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross.
The breakdown for each branch was as follows:
- 3,984 Army
- 762 Army Air Corps
- 31 Marine Corps
- 21 Navy
- 258 Foreign Service Members
- 3 Civilian
The Distinguished Service Cross is the second highest military award that can be given to a member of the United States Army (and previously the United States Air Force) for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force. Actions that merit the Distinguished Service Cross must be of such a high degree that they are above those required for all other U.S. combat decorations, but which do not meet the criteria for the Medal of Honor. The Distinguished Service Cross is equivalent to the Navy Cross (Navy and Marine Corps), the Air Force Cross (Air Force), and the Coast Guard Cross (Coast Guard).
The Distinguished Service Cross was first awarded during World War I. In addition, a number of awards were bestowed for actions which took place before World War I. In many cases, the medal was awarded to soldiers who had received a Certificate of Merit for gallantry; at the time, this certificate was the only other honor for gallantry the Army could present to combatants in lieu of a Medal of Honor.
This is an excellent example of a genuine WW2 period DSC. It is numbered engraved on the reverse side with the initials C.H.S. and is contained in the original case of issue which is also offered in excellent condition. Also included are a mini DSC, 2 x medal ribbon pins and 2 x button hole pins.
