This is an outstanding named U.S. WWII Naval Aviation grouping consisting of an AN-6542 summer flying helmet, original AN-6530 flying goggles, and associated communications wiring identified to Lieutenant Joseph F. Brown of the United States Naval Reserve. Brown, whose official award citation lists him as Ensign Joe Franklin Brown, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing 20 combat flights in the Pacific between February 17 and July 9, 1945.

The AN-6542 was a lightweight summer flying helmet developed under the joint Army-Navy AN equipment system. It was part of the AN-6540, AN-6542, and AN-6543 family of flight helmets, with variations in materials, attachment fittings, chin restraints, goggle straps, and oxygen-mask accommodations.

This example is constructed from tan lightweight fabric and remains in fair, service-used condition. It retains its original tan velvet-covered chinrest, which attaches to the helmet by a snap on one side and an adjustable buckle on the other. The chinrest remains complete and continues to connect correctly to both sides of the helmet.

The helmet retains its communications wiring and both earphone covers. The interiors of the ear covers are inscribed:

Also included is an original pair of AN-6530 flying goggles. The AN-6530 was a mid-WWII joint Army-Navy design based upon a strengthened version of the earlier Army Air Forces B-7 flying goggle. It was manufactured with metal frames, a one-piece rubber face cushion, replaceable lenses, and an adjustable elastic strap.

The goggles remain in fair condition. The rubber face cushion has become completely stiff with age but is still largely intact and attached to the frame. The lenses, frames, and strap show expected age and service wear and should be handled carefully.

Brown’s Distinguished Flying Cross citation identifies him as Ensign Joe Franklin Brown, service number 0-378757, United States Naval Reserve. The citation states that he completed 20 flights in Pacific combat areas where effective enemy anti-aircraft fire or hostile aircraft patrols were expected. His performance between February 17 and July 9, 1945 distinguished him among those carrying out similar duties.

The difference between “Joseph F. Brown” on the equipment and “Joe Franklin Brown” in the citation is consistent with shortened versus formal use of the same name.
