Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very rare WWII U.S.M.C. Canteen set with both the early 1st Pattern cover with Durasnaps, and an exceedingly rare black porcelain canteen. These two items are ridiculously difficult to find on their own, let alone together like this. This example is named to marine Samuel U. Delp.
The canteen cover is the very rare USMC 1st Pattern, with the Durasnaps still fully intact and working, although caution should be taken when opening the cover. It is an overall rough example that shows years of heavy use. The cover is named to two different soldiers, which supports this. The initials J.H. have been painted in silver on the interior, likely the initials of one of the marine who carried this. The belt hanger still functions well. The cover is marked on the bottom S. U. DELP, which identifies this canteen to Samuel U. Delp, who enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 20th, 1943. He spent most of his enlistment stateside, spending some of 1945 in the Pacific with the 1st Marine Division, but it is unclear if he saw combat there.
The canteen itself is a beautiful porcelainized example, with a good amount of wear as shown. The plastic cap and metal chain are still fully intact and function well. The cap is marked S 65 on the interior.
Overall this is a great and rare WWII USMC canteen set, ready to add to your collection and display! Don’t miss it!
