Item Description
Original Items: Only One Lot of 2 Available. A machete is a broad blade used either as an agricultural implement similar to an axe, or in combat like a long-bladed knife. The blade is typically 30 to 45 centimeters (12 to 18 in) long and usually under 3 millimeters (1⁄8 in) thick. In the Spanish language, the word is possibly a diminutive form of the word macho, which was used to refer to sledgehammers. Alternatively, its origin may be machaera, the name given by the Romans to the falcata. It is the origin of the English language equivalent term matchet, though it is less commonly used. In much of the English-speaking Caribbean, such as Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and Grenada and in Trinidad and Tobago, the term cutlass is used for these agricultural tools.
The Machetes In This Lot:
- 1942 Dated 22 ½” Disston Machete With British Broad Arrow Marked Sheath: In 1855, Disston became the first saw manufacturer to produce his own steel. This was the factor that made Disston the most successful saw manufacturer in the U.S. The Morrill Tariff Act of 1861 greatly increased the cost of imported steel, making it impossible for other saw makers to compete with Disston.
Disston accumulated huge profits by supplying steel products to the Union Army during the Civil War. This enabled him to invest in the factory, mechanizing much of the process of saw and tool making, lowering cost and increasing production. Some of the machines used in saw production and the manufacturing of files were unique to Disston. For over half a century, Disston was the leading manufacturer of saws in the world. A Time Magazine article claimed in 1940 that 75 percent of the handsaws sold in the U.S. were Disston.
The machete is in wonderful, service used condition without any extensive damage present. There is some staining and pitting to the blade and the wood grip scales are somewhat loose. The edge is still nice and sharp.
- 1943 Dated 23” True Temper (American Fork & Hoe) Machete With 1943 Atlas Scabbard: Most of the early tools associated with the name TRUE TEMPER can be described as hand tools with wood handles. They were non-motorized and rarely included simple mechanisms. Over 60% of the TRUE TEMPER product line was associated with agriculture, gardening and other forms of outdoor work. Examples of such tools are spades, shovels, forks, hoes, rakes, striking tools (axes, picks, mauls), forged bars and machetes like this example here.
The machete is in wonderful, service used condition without any extensive damage present. There is some staining and pitting to the blade and the bakelite grip scales are solid and in wonderful condition. The edge is still nice and sharp.
Two lovely wartime machetes ready for display!
