  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. General Anthony Clement "Nuts" McAuliffe (2 July 1898 – 10 August 1975) was a senior United States Army officer who earned fame as the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He is celebrated for his one-word reply to a German surrender ultimatum: "Nuts!"

After the battle, McAuliffe was promoted and given command of the 103rd Infantry Division, which he led from January 1945 to July 1945. In the post-war era, he was commander of United States Army Europe.

This is a lovely letter on 103rd Infantry Division stationary typed on July 12th, 1945 from General McAuliffe to a Mrs. Kathryn S. Wines of Front Royal, Virginia, who wrote to the General asking for an autograph for her WWII Collection. The letter measures 7 x 10½” and is in good overall shape with some folding, staining, and tearing on the bottom right edge.

The letter is well-signed and is more than worthy of being framed.

Comes ready for further research and display.
