Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original U.S. WWII M38 tanker helmet manufactured by Rawlings, complete with its original ear flaps, rigid earphone retaining tabs, leather liner, and chinstrap. The M38 became one of the most recognizable pieces of American armored-crew equipment of WWII and remains closely associated with U.S. tank crews serving in both the European and Pacific theaters.
Rawlings was already well established as a manufacturer of sporting and protective equipment before WWII, and the company adapted its experience with padded athletic headgear to military requirements for armored crews.
The helmet is marked as follows:
RAWLINGS
7
76072
PATENT NO'S
130.878
2.282.830
Helmet is in very nice condition, and comes complete with the rigid ear protection tabs (often missing or broken). The ear flaps are also complete and the liner is in excellent supple condition, the chin strap is present. There are no cups in the ears. No “real damage” present aside from the expected service/storage wear.
The combination of the Rawlings manufacturer marking, size 7 designation, 76072 Army specification number, patent markings 130.878 and 2.282.830, complete rigid earphone tabs, intact ear flaps, supple original liner, and surviving chinstrap makes this a particularly strong example of the classic WWII American tanker helmet. The absence of the earphone cups is the principal completeness consideration, while the helmet itself remains in very good overall condition.
