Original U.S. WWII M1917A1 Named Kelly Helmet - Pvt. William Scott

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine very good condition named WWII U.S. Army M1917A1 "Kelly" Helmet. The helmet is complete with the original liner, chin strap and the small leather skull pad that is often missing from these helmets. The shell has the original OD green paint almost fully intact, including the textured exterior. The shell is stamped HS 14 in the steel under the brim. Overall this is a great condition helmet. The leather is still supple, and the chin strap is complete and locks.

The best feature about this helmet is definitely the writing on the inside of the liner, which identifies the owner by name as well as by Army Serial Number:

There is also a marking indicating the unit that he served in: 70. CHEMIC. CO., as well as another name, BRUCE EMBRY, who may have worn the helmet after Pvt. Scott. We have not been able to locate any information regarding the unit listed on the liner, however we did find enlistment information on Scott.

William Scott, A.S.N. 33319682, was born in South Carolina in 1913, and is listed as an African-American in the enlistment record. He enlisted in Philadelphia on June 15th, 1942, at the age of 28/29, and is listed as a Private, Branch Immaterial.

A great original WWII helmet with lots of research potential. Ready to display!

The M1917A1 helmet was a transitional helmet used during the early years of WWII prior to the introduction of the more common M1 Helmet. It was basically a M1917 helmet shell, as used during WWI, with and improved liner and chin strap assembly. These helmets were widely used by the US Army Troops that occupied the Pacific Islands before and the Pearl Harbor Attack. They were also used by the USMC in the early Island Campaigns of 1942 & 1943.

This is an excellent near mint example of a named Original WWII M1917A1 Helmet with an original helmet net.
