Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very nice WWII-era trench-art-style ashtray featuring a detailed model of an American Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter. The unmistakable twin-boom aircraft is mounted on a vertical support above a small metal ashtray base, creating an attractive piece of wartime aviation memorabilia. The piece appears to be constructed from aluminum or a similar lightweight metal. While many comparable wartime souvenirs were made from salvaged aircraft aluminum, we cannot confirm that the metal used in this particular example actually came from an aircraft.
The P-38 model measures approximately 8¼ x 5¾ inches and is mounted above the ashtray on a narrow vertical pole. The complete piece measures approximately 7¾ inches tall, while the rectangular ashtray base measures approximately 3 x 5⅝ inches.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most distinctive American combat aircraft of WWII. Developed for the U.S. Army Air Corps beginning in the late 1930s, it employed an unusual configuration consisting of two Allison engines housed in separate booms with the pilot, armament, and nose landing gear concentrated in a central nacelle.
The design gave the Lightning its instantly recognizable profile and allowed its armament to be concentrated in the nose rather than dispersed throughout the wings. Production versions were typically armed with four .50-caliber machine guns and a 20mm cannon, providing concentrated forward fire without the gun-convergence limitations associated with wing-mounted armament.
The P-38 proved highly adaptable during WWII and served in a wide variety of roles, including interception, long-range fighter escort, fighter-bomber operations, strafing, bombing, and photographic reconnaissance. Its range was particularly valuable in the vast distances of the Pacific Theater, where the Lightning became closely associated with some of the highest-scoring American fighter pilots of the war.
The combination of the 8¼-inch P-38 model, elevated display mounting, integrated ashtray base, lightweight cast-metal construction, and classic WWII American fighter subject makes this an attractive piece of period-style aviation memorabilia. With no markings or documented provenance, its precise manufacturer and the source of the aluminum cannot be established, but its construction and subject make it a particularly interesting addition to a collection of WWII aviation souvenirs and trench art.
