  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is an extensive collection of flags, a forage cap, and photographs taken / captured by a United States Navy sailor during the WWII and Occupation period. There are countless photographs including many which are macabre depicting massive amounts of death, and some which are rather risque of a nude Japanese woman on the beach. There is one leg gaiter in the group that is stenciled with a name on the interior, CANOSA NJ. The only match we could find was Neil J. Canosa, who served aboard LSM 208. This was USS Landing Ship Medium 208. LSM 208 was sent to Guam where they prepared for an invasion of Japan. When Japanese forces surrendered in Sep. 1945, LSM 208 were reassigned to transport men and supplies around Japan for the US occupation.

    The group includes:
    - Hilarious 3-page “INDOCTRINATION FOR RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES” document with many points about return to civilian life. This was made during the period as a spoof and was not an official Army issued document. The lines are very comical including how soldiers will have to settle for real eggs and real milk instead of the powdered ones they are so used to. An outstanding document!
    - Roughly 25 x 35” Silk Rising sun flag, no corner reinforcements. Great shape overall with some minor color bleed and folding.
    - 24 ½ x 35 ½” Japanese meatball flag, cotton with separate sewn meatball. No corner reinforcements but one corner retains tie strings.
    - Japanese Forage cap, wool, no star and may be civilian. Leather sweatband has some kanji on underside. Chinstrap in good shape and tie strings are intact.
    - Single leg gaiter named Canosa NJ.
    - 23 small 2 ½ x 3 ½” macabre photos showing dead bodies, starving children, destroyed homes, some very horrific scenes.
    - 13 very macabre 3 ¾ x 5 ¾” photographs showing bodies, severed heads, mutilated women, executions with swords, horrible scenes.
    - Ten photos of Japanese women in different photo studios and in public, some of which are inscribed on the back with “cute”, “modern and nice” and other attributes. This sailor was certainly interested in Japanese “culture”.
    - Eight 3 ¾ x 5 ¾” photographs of a nude Japanese woman using a net to catch fish on the beach. The sailor was able to convince her to strike a few poses, and the photographs are quite tasteful.
    - Captured photo of Japanese pilot standing at his plane holding propellor, named on back. There is a page with this photo that looks to have attempted to translate it.
    - Captured photos of Japanese sailor with stamps, named on back.
    - Booklet, “How you can win your navy wings”.
    - US Coast Guard Rules to Prevent Collisions of Vessels and Pilot Rules for Certain Inland Waters booklet. Damaged.
    - 100+ mass-produced photographs, some with captions added by the owner.

This is an excellent grouping with some fantastic photography, ready for further research and display!
