  • Original Item: Only One Available. Trench knives, also called knuckle knives, were created to use in close quarters combat, during WWI, when the fighting was taking place primarily in the trenches. They became important weapons in a style of warfare that depended on overtaking an enemy’s trench line. Both the Allied and Axis forces continued to use them during WWII and improved on the original design as seen here.

This is a very interesting theater-made knuckle knife made on the Italian front during the war. It sports a brass hilt which follows the design of the famed M1918 trench knife with a long rounded off pommel, and an 8 ¼” double-edged blade which appears somewhat similar to the blades found on the M.V.S.N. Fascist Militia Blackshirts 2nd Pattern Fighting Dagger. The blades of these knives are also 8 ¼” and have a similar shape, but this one appears to have been cut down moreso. The overall length is roughly 13 ½”.

The blade shows heavy wear from the period with scattered oxidation spotting that has mostly been cleaned away. The blade is still tight to the hilt. The pommel cap looks like it should be able to unscrew, but we could not get it to unscrew.

The 9 ⅜” scabbard is a very interesting example, recycled from a WWI Austro-Hungarian Fighting Knife. There were several variations of this scabbard and this one has a bar and a knob with a small fragment of the original leather strap still retained! There is also some of the original green paint underneath this, but it has mostly worn away. This is certainly a knife that used what parts were laying around!

An outstanding theater-made Italian U.S. WWII Knuckle knife, ready for further research and display!
