Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. USN Chief Specialist Hebert Vincent NSN 7050818 was took part in Operation Husky Invasion of Sicily on July, 1943.
The USS Chateau Thierry (AP-31) had transport duty to the North Atlantic until 29 April 1943, when she cleared New York for a voyage to North Africa, well escorted in a safe passage. Returning to New York, she embarked soldiers and sailors, and cleared 10 June for Oran, arriving 21 June. Here she prepared for the invasion of Sicily, for which she sailed 5 July. Assigned to the floating reserve, Chateau Thierry lay off the hotly contested Gela beaches 10 July as the assault began, and late in the day began landing her reinforcements, continuing into the night. She remained off Sicily for 2 days, firing to aid in turning back the heavy German air attacks, and taking on board Italian prisoners of war. Returning to Bizerte 13 July she landed the Italians, then returned to Sicily to embark members of naval units not needed ashore now that the landings had succeeded. Laden with German prisoners of war at Oran, Chateau Thierry sailed 9 August for New York which she reached 22 August.
Included in this collection of items that were original acquired from Vincent's family are the following items:
- Original WWII Navy dog tag named to Hebert Vincent 705 08 18 and dated 11/42
- Original U.S. WWII Navy USN Mark 1 Fighting Knife by CAMILLUS with leather Scabbard.
- Original U.S. WWII American Flag Oilcloth Invasion Armband. Issued to all soldier invading the beach, this is the third type of Arm flag, which was printed as an armband on a kind of sturdy paper stock resembling wall paper, called oilcloth. This is a semi-waterproof material also called "lacquered cloth" and "American Cloth". It has punch holes and originally came with two safety pins (not included). These armband in this condition typically sell for $500+
- Original U.S. WWII Unopened First Aid Packet.
- Original U.S. WWII Theater modified fighting knife with brass pommel and leather scabbard with belt frog.
