Original U.S. WWII Homefront B-17 Flying Fortress and Tank Destroyer Wood Toys With Field Gun Made From INERT Mk2 M10 Series Fuse - 3 Items

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Set of 2 Available. During WWII, images of war permeated almost every aspect of children’s lives, through toys, puzzles, comic books, cartoons, film, and radio. While government propaganda campaigns targeted adults to encourage patriotism and request support for the war effort, toys and other items ensured the war stayed present in the lives of children. By playing with a toy that reflected the war effort, children participated in something that otherwise would have excluded them.

Wooden toys increased in production during the war as a result of material shortages. Wood toys were made by well known manufacturers and the average home garages alike. All toys were unique in their own ways, such as these three here.

The toys in this lot:
- Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress (repaired broken wing): The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry (prototype Model 299/XB-17) outperformed both competitors and exceeded the Air Corps' performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract (to the Douglas B-18 Bolo) because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances, becoming the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole, twin-engined Junkers Ju 88.

Measures: 11” x 9”

- 75mm Pack Howitzer M1A1 Style Field Gun: Now this is a very ingenious toy using recycled components from an M10 series spoon and fuse (inert) from a Mk2 grenade. This mini field gun actually fires a projectile when the handle on the back is cranked! While there are no projectiles for this, we test “fired” with a small pencil eraser and it worked like a dream still.

- M7 Priest Wood Tank Destroyer With Original Box: This is a wonderful little tank though it does appear to be missing some components. This also served as an educational toy that you can disassemble and assemble according to the box. The overall condition of the tank and box reflects that of something that was cherished by a child for many years. The original paint is retained well and there is no significant damage though the box is torn and missing pieces.

The 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7 was an American self-propelled gun vehicle produced during World War II. It was given the official service name 105 mm Self Propelled Gun, Priest by the British Army, due to the pulpit-like machine gun ring, and following on from the Bishop and the contemporary Deacon self-propelled guns.

A great trio of items ready for further research and display.
