Original U.S. WWII Herder Commando Fighting Knife with Sheath

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a wonderful example of a hard to find WWII fighting knife in really good condition, complete with its original belt scabbard. During WWII there was a very large demand for fighting knives, particularly in the Pacific theater. Not all soldiers would normally be issued them, so the private market for fighting knives was booming.

The Herder "COMMANDO" is one of the rarest U.S. fighting knives used during WW2. Theses bare bones knives were available in several variants, and were definitely utilitarian, having simple carved handles, and the cross guards were all made with heavy twisted brass wire, similar to what was used for WWI belt clips. Some variants had a twisted brass pommel guard as well. For more information please see U.S. MILITARY KNIVES BAYONETS & MACHETES: BOOK IV by M.H. Cole, pages 150-151.

This example has a 5 7/8" blade, wood grip and trusted brass wire hang guard with a twisted brass wire pommel loop. The blade has been over sharpened. The wood handle is in excellent condition, with three rivets. The front is stamped:

Herder
PHILA.

The original issue leather sheath is intact and solid and is nicely stamped:

COMMANDO

Herder
PHILA.

This is a rare variant of a rare knife, it's not the most common style encountered, in fact 5 know styles are known by collectors to exist and this two rivet type with double brass wires and single marked grip is among the hardest to find
