  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is a very nice WWII European front send-home grouping of German souvenirs, purportedly sent home by German Immigrant Corporal Kurt H Gieschen of the Army Air Forces, who enlisted at Fort Jay on Governor’s Island, New York on October 1st, 1942. He sent the crate to his home at 1117 Teller Avenue in the Bronx.


    The items include:


    - MG FF Cannon Ammunition Crate sent home with the information on the lid. The crate measures 28 ½ x 9 x 8”. One of the handles is broken and the other is fragile. Both press-in latches work well. 
    - 6 ¼ x 9 ⅝” aluminum board taken from aircraft with labels from buttons and coins attached during period, very interesting display piece. 
    - WWII 98k 1940 dated Bayonet by Jetter and Scheerer with Scabbard, not matching. Fair condition.
    - WWII 98k 1943 dated Bayonet by F. W. Höller with 1940-dated Scabbard, not matching. 
    - German WWII canteen, aluminum with aluminum cap and leather harness. Moth damage to wool cover. 
    - German WWII canteen, aluminum with aluminum cap and leather harness. RZM marked hanger attached to harness. Moth damage to wool cover. 
    - Gottinga 8x Modell B binoculars, Spindler & Soye of Gottinger, rough. 
    - Caravel 10x50 binoculars, Dr. Wohler of Kassel. Original neck strap is retained. Good optics.
    - Two original German West Wall medals, one with a retained safety pin.
    - Bakelite match case with 20~ matches still inside. 
    - Uncut roll of Deutscher Volksstrum Wehrmacht armbands(?), 12 x 23 ½”.
    - Large German burlap sack, marked Bk. Kp. Cp. boul.. 26 x 52”


    Kurt Henry Gieschen was born in Mooringen, Germany on December 21st, 1921. He and his family immigrated to the United States on November 5th, 1928, and he grew up in the Bronx. He enlisted in the Army at Fort Jay on Governor’s Island, New York on October 1st, 1942. He spent time overseas in the European Theater of Operations with the AAF. He was discharged on September 7th, 1945 and spent the rest of his life in New York, passing away on June 27th, 1980, at the age of 58.
