Original Item: Only One Available. This is a beautifully preserved U.S. WWII Geo. Schrade Presto M2 Paratrooper pocket knife, a distinctive piece of equipment associated with American paratroopers during the Second World War. It features a black molded plastic/composition handle with a deeply textured, jigged pattern for improved grip, along with the characteristic automatic-opening blade, push-button release, sliding safety, and steel lanyard bail at the pommel.

The blade is clearly marked on one side of the tang PRESTO / PAT. JAN. 30-40, referring to George Schrade's January 30, 1940 patent for his automatic-opening pocket knife mechanism. The reverse tang is marked:

GEO. SCHRADE
KNIFE CO. INC.
B'P'T CONN.

These markings identify manufacture by the George Schrade Knife Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The knife retains its black molded handle scales, which display a pronounced irregular jigged pattern intended to provide a secure grip. The round blade-release button and rectangular sliding safety are both present, as is the steel bail at the end of the handle for attachment of a lanyard.

This example is accompanied by a green woven cord lanyard together with its brown paper wrapper, completing the set. The lanyard remains separate from the knife and can be displayed either alongside it or attached through the rear bail.

Condition is good overall, with wear consistent with age and use. The black handle shows scattered handling wear, while the metal bolster has light oxidation, spotting, and surface wear. The blade remains full, with scattered spotting, minor oxidation, and light scratches.

The M2 pocket knife was developed for U.S. airborne personnel as a compact cutting tool that could be opened quickly with one hand. For paratroopers, this was an important practical feature: after landing, the knife could be used to cut parachute suspension lines or other equipment if the wearer became entangled, while also serving for routine field tasks. A rear bail allowed the knife to be secured with a lanyard, reducing the risk of losing it during a jump or while handling equipment.
