Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting three piece group of period commemorative items depicting General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most recognizable American military commanders of the 20th century. The lot includes a figural coin bank, a miniature porcelain carafe, and a porcelain character cup made in Occupied Japan.
Douglas MacArthur served with distinction in both World Wars and later during the Korean War. He was Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from 1930 to 1935, commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific during WWII, oversaw the occupation of Japan as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, and later commanded United Nations forces during the Korean War. He attained the five star rank of General of the Army and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines during WWII.
The first item is a figural General MacArthur coin bank made from a plaster or plaster like composition material. MacArthur is depicted in uniform with his characteristic peaked cap. The modeling is somewhat crude and stylized rather than an especially accurate portrait.
A coin slot is located on the reverse, while the underside has an access door for removing the contents. The bottom door is still present but no longer closes properly. The bank shows heavy chipping to the hat and body, along with general surface wear and age throughout.
The second item is a very small porcelain water carafe featuring a portrait depiction of MacArthur on the side. It measures approximately 3 5/8 inches tall and remains an appealing small piece of wartime or immediate postwar commemorative porcelain.
The third item is a porcelain character cup formed as a bust of MacArthur. It was manufactured in Occupied Japan and is hand painted in a rather crude but charming manner. The original lid is missing, though the side handle remains intact.
The underside is marked:
MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN
The Occupied Japan marking dates the cup to the period of the Allied occupation following WWII, making it particularly appropriate for a MacArthur commemorative piece given his central role as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in Japan from 1945 to 1951.
Condition varies between the three pieces. The bank has the most substantial damage, with heavy chipping and a nonclosing bottom door. The porcelain pieces show general age and handling wear, while the bust cup is missing its lid.
Together, these three pieces make a very attractive group of MacArthur related memorabilia spanning the wartime and immediate postwar period, combining American home front style commemorative material with a particularly interesting Occupied Japan souvenir.
