Original Item: Only One Available. Guns, tanks, and bombs were the principal weapons of World War II, but there were other, more subtle forms of warfare as well. Words, posters, and films waged a constant battle for the hearts and minds of the American citizenry just as surely as military weapons engaged the enemy. Persuading the American public became a wartime industry, almost as important as the manufacturing of bullets and planes. The Government launched an aggressive propaganda campaign with clearly articulated goals and strategies to galvanize public support, and it recruited some of the nation's foremost intellectuals, artists, and filmmakers to wage the war on that front.
This is a lovely piece of WWII Industrial Incentive propaganda, an OFFICIAL NAVY POSTER designed and commissioned by the INDUSTRIAL INCENTIVE DIVISION, NAVY DEPARTMENT circa 1942 during WWII. The 30" x 40" poster itself is in excellent condition, and was printed by EINSON-FREEMAN CO. INC. L.I. CITY N.Y.. It has been matted and glazed in a very sturdy frame, measuring 39" x 49", with a sturdy wire on the back, ready to hang on the wall.
Maintaining peak productive capacity was vital to the war, so workers taking a day off for any reason had a major potential for lost productivity. The top of the poster urges the viewer to "THINK OF THEM BEFORE YOU TAKE A DAY OFF!", and below this are three captioned illustrations of three servicemen, two from the U.S. Navy, and one from the U.S. Marine Corps. Each has suffered significantly during their service, as described below the illustrations, while the top of each bears a different message such as WANT SOME FUN?, WEATHER TOO HOT?, and ALL WORN OUT?, common excuses for taking a day off. The left most illustration is by HOTCHKISS USNR, while the other two are by LOVELL USNR.
The stories below each illustration are definitely compelling, as are the illustrations themselves, showing servicemen worn and injured from their service. Reminding workers the type of hellish conditions that the combatants in the war was definitely a bit incentive to not take a day off, and to work as hard as possible to support the fighters overseas.
A magnificent display piece that would look fantastic hanging on your wall!
