  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Set. This is an outstanding framed set of photographs taken home after World War II by Chief Yeoman Maurice Alvin Thompson, who served on the staff of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Fleet. The frame, which measures 23 ¼ x 24 ¼”, contains 13 total photos, some of which are part of a “set” of which there are purportedly only four in existence. As the labels at the bottom of the frame say, “Morri” (Maurice) developed the photographs and sent them / gave them to Nimitz, and that he saved a set of the photographs for himself, the photo in the center being the main one. The photo in the bottom center actually depicts Thompson receiving the Commendation Letter from Nimitz. We found a period newspaper article confirming this.

In the bottom left of the frame on the outside of the frame itself is Thompson’s Navy ID card, further authenticating the set. The back of the frame has a trail of provenance for the frame, showing that it was given by Thompson to George Priebe who died in 2016.

The frame also has a photo of the Iwo Jima flag raising, a photo of the surrender document itself, and some others. The set definitely requires more research, but the provenance for Thompson is excellent, making this an outstanding one-of-a-kind set.

Thompson after the war had an interesting career in the TV industry, working on “I Love Lucy" and directing Lucille Ball’s second sitcom, “The Lucy Show”. He was nominated for an Emmy for a 1966-1967 episode.
