Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a great framed photograph of the “Black Sheep” Squadron, VMF-214. This was a legendary U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadron in World War II, famous for its aggressive tactics under Major "Pappy" Boyington in the South Pacific, flying F4U Corsairs and achieving high scores in destroying enemy aircraft during a short but impactful combat tour from late 1943 to early 1944. Formed from a collection of misfits and replacement pilots, they became known as the "Black Sheep" due to their unconventional assembly and earned acclaim for their combat record.
This great framed photo is signed in the bottom left corner “Black Sheep” / Harry Johnson. This identifies the signed as Harry “Skinny” Johnson, the final survivor of the squadron and the pilot credited with the final Zero shot down by the squadron.
Johnson’s obituary reads:
Harry Cecil Johnson of Destin, Florida, passed away at the age of 93 on December 3, 2014. Harry was born in Atmore, Alabama and raised in Birmingham. He graduated from Phillips High School and later attended the University of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Dorse Johnson. Harry was a fighter pilot with the famed Black Sheep Squadron in WWII, where he shot down the final Japanese Zero. After achieving the rank of Major in the Marine Corp., he served in the Korean War as a night fighter. Upon his return to Birmingham, he built a successful company manufacturing electrical connectors. After retirement, Harry made his permanent home in sunny Destin, Florida, where he formed a close association with other pilots residing in the area. He looked forward to the Thursday morning breakfast club with these men. Harry volunteered at the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, which houses a replica of the Corsair that he flew in combat.
A great framed shot, ready for display.
