Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a great lot of framed WWII autographs including Hap Holleran, Rex Barber, Alex Vraciu, and William King.
The lot includes:
- 5 x 7” framed shot signed by Rex Barber. Rex Theodore Barber Sr. (May 6, 1917 – July 26, 2001) was a World War II fighter pilot from the United States. He is best known as a member of Operation Vengeance, the top secret mission to intercept the aircraft carrying Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in April 1943. There is a controversy over which pilot shot down Yamamoto's plane, but most modern historians credit Rex T. Barber.
- 8¾ x 10¾” framed shot signed by Alex Vraciu and “E.L. Hank”. Alexander Vraciu was a United States Navy fighter ace, Navy Cross recipient, and Medal of Honor nominee during World War II. At the end of the war, Vraciu ranked fourth among the U.S. Navy's flying aces, with 19 enemy planes downed during flight and 21 destroyed on the ground. After the war, he served as a test pilot and was instrumental in forming the post-war Naval and Marine Air Reserve program. We are unsure who the other signature is.
- 8¾ x 10¾” framed shot signed by William B. King, Lt. Col, USAF. During World War II, William King became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5.5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, and retired in 1964 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
- 9¼ x 11¼” framed shot of Hap Halloran with his fellow crew members. The bottom notes about Pappy Boyington, with whom Halloran was a POW. On January 27, 1945 took off aboard B-29 "Rover Boys Express" 42-24769 as navigator on a bombing mission against the Musashiho and Nakajima aircraft factories near Tokyo. Fifteen miles west of the target near Mount Fuji, this B-29 was attacked by Ki-45 Nick pilot 1st Lt. Kashiide who opened fire head on and 37mm cannon rounds hit the nose destroying the electrics, intercoms, perspex and lost cabin pressure. Damaged, Smith ordered the crew to bail out and seven including Halloran managed to parachute out successfully. The seven crew that bailed out including Halloran landed safely but were quickly captured by the Japanese and turned over to the Japanese Army Kempeitai (Kempei-Tai) military police. Halloran was held in a cage at Ueno Zoo and then transfered to Omori POW Camp and after solitary confinement was in a barracks with Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. At the end of the Pacific War, liberated from captivity. Halloran last report date was September 5, 1945 at Tokyo POW Camp (Shinjuku) Tokyo Bay Area 35-140.
