  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. The 1st Special Service Force was an elite American–Canadian commando unit in World War II, under the command of the United States Fifth Army. The unit was organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana, in the United States. The Force served in the Aleutian Islands, and fought in Italy, and southern France before being disbanded in December 1944.

This is a lovely little group with a letter to Corporal James P. McCormack, HQ Company, FSSF, a photo of a group of FSSF men from a man named Bill, and a small 4th of July Ball tag for the FSSF.

The photo measures 3½ x 5” and is captioned TAKEN - NICE - FRANCE, THEE OLD GANG F.S.S.F.. The photo owner, Bill, marks where he is and his friend next to him. The letter is written to McCormack, so there is no military content inside. The tag is interesting, reading:

    4TH OF JULY BALL
    FT. WM. HARRISON
    1ST SP. SV. FORCE
    HELENA, MT.

There’s a card behind it with spots for people to write their names. A lovely ephemera group, ready for further research and display.
