Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding large size banner or flag with a hand-drawn Eagle, Globe, Anchor (EGA) insignia over “U.S. MARINE CORPS”. The eagle has a scroll to the sides reading SEMPER FIDELIS.
The single-sided banner measures roughly 30 ½ x 34 ½” and is rather crude with some holes and staining across. The base color is black while the anchor, land on the globe, and SEMPER FIDELIS are red, a very interesting color choice. This was certainly hand-done by a Marine or by someone for a marine in their family, we cannot say for certain as there is no provenance.
Due to the construction and overall look, we date this piece to the WWII period, even though the SEMPER FIDELIS banner was not added in the official design until June 22nd, 1954. Unofficial depictions very often used Semper Fidelis during the WWII era.
A great piece, ready for display.
