Original U.S. WWII Era USAAF Bomber Air Crew Crash Escape Axe - 42D8331

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. In excellent condition, this is the real thing: a CRASH AXE used by Air Crewmen to break out of damaged aircraft. Heavy hard Rubber permanently attached handle cover with large curved blade axe head with spike protruding rearward. Measures 15 1/2 inches long, with a 7 1/2 inch long head. This style of axe was used by American (and British) bomber crews during WWII and after. This example is not dated, but is marked with US Military Reference number on the rubber handle: 42D8331. There is no maker marking on the axe, which is typical for U.S. military contracts.

The rubber handles on these axes are often marked with 20,000V or 40,000V, indicating the degree of electrical insulation. Getting out of the aircraft would often involve cutting through live electrical circuits, and it was also possible that the aircraft might become tangled in electrical lines. With this rubber handles, the crewmen did not need to worry about being electrocuted.

In fine operational condition and ready to display.
