Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original U.S. WWII-era 48-star American flag manufactured by the Valley Forge Flag Company, measuring approximately 34 x 58 inches. The flag retains strong color, attractive service wear, and a desirable medium display size suitable for framing or inclusion in a WWII homefront or military display.

The flag is of multi-piece construction, with each red and white stripe formed from a separate section of fabric. The material appears to be cotton or linen bunting, with a heavy canvas header along the hoist.

The blue canton carries 48 printed white stars on both sides, consistent with economical commercial and wartime flag construction of the period. Forty-eight stars represented the United States from the admission of Arizona in 1912 until Alaska became the 49th state in 1959.

The header is clearly maker-marked VALLEY FORGE FLAG CO., identifying manufacture by the long-established Pennsylvania flag company.

Valley Forge Flag Company was founded in 1882, and remains a family-owned business to this day. Steeped in history, the company began as a burlap sack business, and then moved on to World War I surplus, including American flags. With increasing demand the company opened a small sewing factory in Spring City, PA in 1932. The opening of this factory was the beginning of the Valley Forge Flag brand. We have had other fine flags by this company, and they were a known maker of many types of WWII Flags.

The flag retains its color well and is quite beautiful. There isn’t any serious tearing with just fold creases and some age creasing.

The combination of the Valley Forge Flag Co. marking, 48-star configuration, separate sewn stripes, printed star field, heavy canvas header, brass grommets, and surviving period wear makes this a strong example of an American national flag from the WWII era. Its moderate size and largely intact condition make it particularly well suited to framed display, while the construction and maker marking provide the strongest evidence for its period attribution.
