Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is an excellent memento from WWII and a great display piece at that! This polished and repainted propeller was one of four that would have been present on a North American P-51 Mustang, a long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. We received this prop from an avid aviation collector’s private museum and would be perfect to fall back into the hands of a like-minded collector!
The Mustang was designed in April 1940 by a team headed by James H. Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The commission approached NAA to build Curtiss P-40 fighters and the newer P-46 under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, NAA proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 days after the contract was signed, and first flew on 26 October.
The propeller itself stands at approximately 34 inches tall and is mounts on a 6” wide felt bottomed base. This would make for an excellent standing display among the uniforms and items that an individual who once piloted these amazing aircraft.
A wonderful example ready for further research and display!
