  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a beautiful example of a service worn M1 helmet. The best feature with this helmet is the hand painted Sergeants chevrons on the front. Unfortunately, there are bullet hole entry and exit points, 4 holes to be exact. We are hoping that this helmet fell victim to target practice or the soldier was only wearing the liner when it was shot, heck, he could’ve even used it as a decoy for all we know. However, there is some unknown dark staining that tells a different story on the chinstrap, and it could explain why there’s no liner with it.

The U.S. WWII M-1 helmet was only produced from 1941 to 1945. The Ordnance Department selected McCord Radiator and Manufacturing Company of Detroit Michigan to produce the steel M1 helmet bodies. These bodies were made from a single piece of Hadfield Manganese steel that was produced by the Carnegie-Illinois & Sharon Steel Corporations. Each completed raw M-1 helmet shell weighed 2.25 lbs each.

The later produced M-1 helmet shells had a set of fixed (static) chinstrap loops called "bales” and a stainless steel rim. These rims were both rust resistant and had "non-magnetic qualities'' that reduced the chance of error readings when placed around certain sensitive equipment (such as a compass).

This helmet shell is a fine example and still retains all of its original WW2 parts and the shell has all original "corked" grain paint. It features a front seam and fixed bales, features which indicate pre-1944 production. The shell has a heat lot number of 93 E and puts production sometime in March 1942.

This shell is a nasty reminder of the gruesome reality that is warfare. Comes ready to display.
