Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. British made Geographical Section, General Staff, No. 2738 Published by the War Office 1914, 4th Edition 1943.

Map is entitled 'Cherbourg - Valogres', France, 1 to 100,000 scale, Sheet 6E, 1942, 2nd edition 1943. This map shows the area of Normandy including Utah and Omaha Beaches, Carentan and St. Mere Eglise. An Allied map of Normandy of the type used during the 1944 Battle of Normandy.

This is an extremely rare full color single side paper map of Normandy issued to the Army / Air for use during the D-Day planning and the invasion of Normandy. Map shows the locations of known trig (triangulation) points throughout Normandy including Omaha and Utah beaches as well as some of the most famous towns and locations during the battle. This map is featured in the permanent collection of the of the D-Day Story exhibit of the Portsmouth Museum and can be found on their website at this link.

Believed to have been used with 2015/362/14, a sketch map drawn on tracing paper by G.R. Clarke in June-August 1943 showing Normandy including the D-Day landing beaches and areas immediately inland. That map shows which areas have different types of soil. This information was part of the preparations for D-Day, as it helped understand which areas might become waterlogged after heavy rain for example. Part of the papers Gordon Robin Clarke, a soil scientist at Oxford University for was involved in the geological study of Normandy as part of the preparations for D-Day. He worked for or with the Inter Service Topographical Department (ISTD), which gathered an analysed a wide range of information about possible landing sites in North West Europe, to inform the choice of the best location for what became the D-Day Landings.

Map measures approximately 25" x 33". Overall condition is good with some staining and a 2" x 2" section where there is Ocean.
