Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original 1941 U.S. Civil Defense “AMERICA CALLING” poster, issued by the Division of Information, Office for Emergency Management and printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office. Measuring approximately 22 x 28 inches, the poster features the distinctive Civil Defense insignia at center and was created to encourage Americans to volunteer through their local defense councils.
The Office of Civilian Defense was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt under Executive Order 8757 on May 20, 1941, several months before the United States formally entered WWII. Operating within the Office for Emergency Management, it coordinated civilian protective measures and encouraged local participation in activities such as air-raid precautions, emergency medical work, auxiliary firefighting, communications, rescue services, and other home-front preparedness programs.
This is a great 1941- dated Civil Defense poster, depicting the famous CD triangle insignia of the Civil Defense. The poster reads:
AMERICA
CALLING
CD
Take your place in
CIVILIAN DEFENSE
CONSULT YOUR NEAREST DEFENSE COUNCIL
DIVISION OF INFORMATION, OFFICE FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE: 1941-O-423671
There is wear along the edges and some overall staining, with some minor tears as seen, but this example has held up well overall.
The combination of the 1941 date, Office for Emergency Management attribution, U.S. Government Printing Office number, Herbert Matter design, Civil Defense insignia, and surviving 22 x 28-inch format makes this an excellent example of American home-front mobilization immediately before the United States entered WWII. The poster would benefit from archival framing both for display and continued preservation.
