Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is the astounding theater-made uniform “bush jacket” of Lieutenant Colonel James Samuel Fisackerly, a flight surgeon with the AAF in the CBI front, who assisted in the rescue of Prisoners of War alongside “Air Commandos” in Burma. He was also a personal friend of Charles Chenault. Also included is his crusher cap.
The bush jacket is in great shape with some minor staining, and the interior is named in three places to Fisackerly. The jacket has gorgeous direct-embroidered Flight Surgeon wings over the left breast pocket and embroidered officer’s collar insignia, as well as gorgeous direct-embroidered Colonel eagle insignia on the shoulder boards. There is a theater-made CBI patch on the left shoulder and an AAF patch on the right shoulder. There is a small hole in one of the armpits but otherwise the jacket is in great service-worn condition.
Included is a printed photograph of POW Lt. Colonel Douglas G. Gilbert being escorted by Colonel James Fisackerly, and the jacket he is wearing in the photo appears to be this one, though it is a bit too blurry to say for sure.
The tan officer’s “Crusher” visor cap is by “The Lee Flight” and is in great shape with an intact sweatband and celluloid sweat cover. There is some heavy staining on the crown and some wear to the leather trim on the visor, but overall this example has held up well.
Fisackerly graduated from the University of Mississippi, and completed Medical School at Tulane University, in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Burma campaign as a flight surgeon, and the Korean War, where he commanded the largest Air Force Hospital at the time, in Nagoya, Japan. Following hospital commands at Selfridge AFB, MI, and Langley AFB, VA, he was assigned to Keesler to oversee the completion of the present Keesler AFB Hospital. He retired from the military in 1960 and practiced in his Biloxi clinic on Division Street, for over 35 years. He was a fellow with the American College of Preventative Medicine, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
This is an excellent uniform set, ready for further research and display.
