Original U.S. WWII Cased Field-Awarded Bronze Star with Citation - 90th Chemical Mortar Battalion

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely example of a complete Bronze Star set with case, medal and lapel device with the original citation sheet. As the medal was field-awarded, it was not engraved, but the citation sheet provides all the provenance the medal needs.

The citation names the soldier, Staff Sergeant Wallace A. Williams, SN 33001863, Chemical Warfare Service, Company C, 90th Chemical Mortar Battalion.

“During the intermittent absence of the platoon officers on other duties, Sergeant Williams, a platoon sergeant, assumed command and displayed unusual initiative, skillfully supervised the tactical functioning of his platoon. He effectively directed the supporting fire of his platoon in the drive from the Roer River to the Rhine River until he was evacuated for wounds. Sergeant Williams’ outstanding service reflects credit on him and the Armed Forces of the United States.”

The citation letter is signed GO (General Order) 67 HQ III CORPS 4 JUNE 1945. It is also embossed with the Adjutant General’s seal. This is a fantastic Bronze Star group.

Comes ready for further research and display.

The Bronze Star
The Bronze Star Medal is a United States Armed Forces decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone.

When the medal is awarded by the Army, Air Force, or Space Force for acts of valor in combat, the "V" device is authorized for wear on the medal. When the medal is awarded by the Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard for acts of valor or meritorious service in combat, the Combat "V" is authorized for wear on the medal.

Officers from the other Uniformed Services of the United States are eligible to receive this award, as are foreign soldiers who have served with or alongside a service branch of the United States Armed Forces.

Civilians serving with U.S. military forces in combat are also eligible for the award. For example, UPI reporter Joe Galloway was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" device during the Vietnam War for rescuing a badly wounded soldier under fire in the Battle of Ia Drang, in 1965.
