Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very good original U.S. WWII wooden ammunition crate originally packed with 1,500 cartridges of Caliber .30 M1 Ball ammunition. This was .30-06 service ammunition intended for use in weapons such as the M1903 Springfield, M1917 Enfield, M1 Garand, and Browning machine guns, rather than the .30 Carbine ammunition used in the M1 Carbine. The crate retains its original wooden lid, though the securing posts and nuts are now absent, so the lid simply rests in place for display.
The crate is labeled on the large side:
1500 CARTRIDGES
BALL
CALIBER .30 M1
IN CLIPS IN CARTONS
AMMUNITION LOT NUMBER
FRANKFORD ARSENAL 1883
The other side is stenciled:
1,348 RDS - LOT - 1883
152-RDS - LOT - 1879
The box is missing the lead liner and there are no contents. The lid does not retain any of the posts or nuts.
The box measures 18¼ x 9¼ x 14½” and is constructed using rabbet joint corners. It is painted brown with a large red stripe on all sides, indicating mid war production, with the markings stenciled in yellow, and bears the ordnance "flaming bomb" on the front and right sides.
Overall condition is fair, showing wear commensurate with age and service. Even without the posts or nuts it will sit fine for display.
The combination of the 1,500-round M1 Ball designation, Frankford Arsenal lot markings, mixed Lot 1883 and Lot 1879 breakdown, yellow wartime stenciling, Ordnance flaming bombs, original lid, and surviving painted finish makes this a particularly good example of WWII U.S. ammunition packaging. Its large size and clear markings make it especially well suited to a display focused on U.S. small-arms ammunition, ordnance logistics, or M1 Garand and machine-gun equipment.
