Original Item. Only One Available. On June 27, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Civilian Pilot Training Act of 1939 into law. The law not only strengthened our national defense prior to entering World War II, but also opened up pilot training to many who would never have had an opportunity to learn to fly. The act allowed the FAA’s predecessor agency, the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA), to expand an experimental program, authorized in December 1938, to train civilian pilots through educational institutions.
This is a great lot of wings and insignia used by instructors of the CAA or other civilian aviation groups during the war. They include:
- Rare Sterling Hartlee Field miniature wings. Denton’s Hartlee Field was a training place for World War II glider pilots.
- Sterling USAAF Civilian Pilot Training Instructor wings, great shape with good pinback.
- Two miniature sets of Civilian instructor wings, not marked Sterling but likely Sterling. Pinback.
- USAAF Civilian Flight Instructor Cap Badge, marked Sterling. Great example with some tarnishing.
- Two sets of North American Aviation miniature wings, one pinback and one screwback.
- Two small circular screwback pins, Sterling, with maker marks on the screws. Likely used as ranks by Civilian pilots.
- AWS Army Air Forces Observer miniature wings, Sterling marked. Pinback.
A great set, and with the current price of Silver, a great value! Ready for display.
