Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is an outstanding original WWII grouping belonging to Private First Class Charles J. Bahr of Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Bahr served with an 81mm mortar section and participated in the 501st PIR’s combat operations in Normandy, Holland, and the Ardennes. The centerpiece of the group is Bahr’s D-Day Invasion American Flag Oilcloth Armband flag which he cut away from the armband, and inscribed on the back:
PFC Charles J. Bahr HQ 3 / 501 Prcht.
Chicago, Ill.
NORMANDY (Parachute)
HOLLAND (Parachute)
The Bulge - Bastogne
Germany
81mm Mortar
The two drawn parachutes denote the campaigns in which he made a combat jump. He was also wounded in Holland at Talitha Kumi on November 6th, 1944. The flag piece currently measures 3 ¾ x 6 ⅛” and would look outstanding in a double-sided glass frame to show both sides.
The rest of the group consists of a 101st Airborne patch with a loosely-stitched AIRBORNE rocker, a 1st Allied Airborne patch, and an Airborne Command patch with integral rocker. There are two printed photographs of Bahr overseas, along with a very rare bit of research to find, copies of Bahr’s original honorable discharge paperwork which goes into great detail about his service. He saw combat at Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal.
Charles J. Bahr was born October 4th, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. Bahr was inducted on December 11th, 1942, and was trained as a paratrooper and mortar gunner. He left for Europe on January 18th, 1944. He returned to the US for a brief period from January 23-27th, 1945 likely on furlough, and returned to the ETO for the final months of the war.
This is a beautiful group with an incredible invasion armband flag worn through every major combat of the 501st PIR.
