Original U.S. WWII Bringback Group of Two German Luftwaffe Flying Helmets, Cockpit Clock, and Flight Gloves in S/Sgt. George A. Stump’s Send-Home Crate

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is an exceptional U.S. WWII bringback grouping assembled and mailed home by Staff Sergeant George A. Stump, service number 35224994, of the 976th Engineer Maintenance Company. The group consists of two German Luftwaffe flying helmets with communications equipment, a damaged 1943 German military duty clock, and a pair of flight gloves, all retained within a German equipment crate bearing Stump’s wartime send-home information and his wife’s address in Columbus, Ohio.
The survival of the German equipment together within its named shipping crate gives the group a particularly strong provenance. While no individual item is marked directly to Stump, the address information establishes that the crate was sent home under his name while he was serving with the 976th Engineer Maintenance Company.
The crate was originally intended for a German Kurskreisel, or directional gyroscope. Instruments of this type were used to provide directional reference in German aircraft and, in certain configurations, armored vehicles. The crate has some damage and material loss to the wood along the edge of the lid, but the latch still works fine and the carry handle is intact. The crate measures 9 x 9 ½ x 10 ½” and is inscribed on the side with Stump’s send-home information:

The contents of the crate include:
- German WWII Luftwaffe LKpW101 Leather Winter Flying Helmet in Size 58cm with avionics. Manufactured by Siemens in great condition with outstanding condition cord still retained. Avionics are Mi4b Ln.26779-2 marked and in great shape with working snaps. Near perfect example.
- German WWII Luftwaffe LKP S101 Summer Pilot Flying Helmet with Avionics in size 56cm. Manufactured by Karl Heisler of Berlin. Headphones manufactured by De Te We Deutsch Telephonwerke und Kabel Industrie A.G. of Berlin. Cable is now entirely stripped with twisted green wire now visible for entire length, and plug has broken off of end but is still present. Avionics are Mi4a Fl.26779-1 marked. Very good overall example.
- German Wehrmacht communication room duty clock, used in radio command vehicles and communication stations. Manufactured by Tobias Bauerle & Sohne and dated 1943. It is broken with many pieces moving around inside, and the glass cover is loose. The second hand is broken off and rolling around inside.
- Pair of German WWII era flight gloves with harness clip on one side marked with anchor. No other markings. There is heavy wear across both with loss of finish and some popped stitching.
Staff Sergeant George A. Stump’s service number, unit designation, APO routing, and home address give this grouping a direct American bringback context. The inscriptions demonstrate that the crate was prepared for shipment to Mrs. G. Stump in Columbus, although they do not establish the precise location or circumstances under which each German item was acquired.
The Siemens LKpW101 winter helmet, Karl Heisler LKP S101 summer helmet, Mi4b and Mi4a communications equipment, damaged 1943 Tobias Bäuerle & Söhne clock, worn flight gloves, and named German equipment crate form a substantial grouping of Luftwaffe and German military material. The complete send-home information distinguishes it from separately assembled souvenir collections and preserves an important connection between captured German equipment and the American serviceman who mailed it home.
