Original Grouping. One-of-a-Kind. This is the tremendous uniform & framed photograph grouping of Distinguished Flying Cross recipient 2nd Lieutenant Clemens Leroy Syverson, Co-Pilot of the B-26 Marauder “Booger Red II”, 559th Bombardment Squadron, 387th Bombardment Group, 9th Air Force. The grouping includes Syverson’s British-Made ETO Officer’s jacket with a lovely set of bullion wings and ribbon bar, his USAAF Officer’s crush visor cap, and a great personally-made souvenir frame with an etching of Syverson and his B-26. In our research, we were able to find a photograph of Syverson wearing this exact jacket & cap!
Syverson’s jacket is a gorgeous British-made ETO officer’s jacket with some heavy wear from being worn overseas. There is a gorgeous set of bullion pilot’s wings on the left breast, above a lovely four-place ribbon bar consisting of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 2 Bronze OLCs and 1 Silver OLC, the American Campaign medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign medal with one campaign star. There are Lieutenant’s bars on the shoulders and US & Aviation collar insignia. There is a laundry tag reading Syverson in the pocket and another with his serial number, O-742383. The jacket has some moth nipping across as shown, and has very cool custom diagonal pockets, a great touch!
Syverson’s USAAF Officer’s crush visor cap is also included, and retains its original cap insignia as well as the wrap-around chinstrap. The interior shows some heavy service wear, likely from sweatstaining.
The included frame measures 8¼ x 13¼” and is a great personally-made piece depicting an etching of Syverson inserted over a B-26 Marauder with the correct nose art for Booger Red II at the front, and the correct serial number, 13874. It was a gift for Syverson’s parents.
Also included are printed copies of his Air Medal & DFC Award cards, which state that Syverson was awarded a staggering 6 Oak Leaf Clusters on his Air Medal! His DFC unfortunately does not come with its citation, which we were unable to locate. A great research project!
Clemens Leroy Syverson was born on February 12th, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the age of 20, Syverson became a pilot in the US Army Air Force, going overseas quite early in 1943 and being assigned to the B-26 “Booger Red II” of the 559th Bombardment Squadron, 387th Bombardment Group, 9th Air Force. While overseas he was awarded the Air Medal 7 times and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He met his wife, Joyce, while he was serving in England. After the war he graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1950, and worked for a series of important companies: Bell, Cornell, RCA and eventually CSC in southern New Jersey, where he worked until he was 81. He passed away on November 29th, 2009, at the age of 85, in Beverly, New Jersey.
