The Battle of Okinawa (Japanese: 沖縄戦, Hepburn: Okinawa-sen), codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by the United States Army and United States Marine Corps forces against the Imperial Japanese Army. The initial invasion of Okinawa on 1 April 1945 was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The Kerama Islands surrounding Okinawa were preemptively captured on 26 March 1945 by the U.S. Army 77th Infantry Division. The 82-day battle on Okinawa lasted from 1 April 1945 until 22 June 1945. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were planning to use Kadena Air Base on the island as a staging point for Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands, 340 mi (550 km) away.
This is a tremendous study of Okinawa-Gunto prepared and printed on February 1st, 1945 in preparation for the invasion of Okinawa and the beginning of the Battle of Okinawa which began on April 1st, 1945. The folder consists of several maps, battle plans, and a very thick study into the history and characteristics of the island, along with tide movements, and a group of confidential photographs taken of the island prior to the invasion. The entire set was originally issued as SECRET but has since been downgraded to RESTRICTED as can be seen on the cover.
The set was prepared by the Objective Data Section G-2, USAFPOA. The study itself is roughly 100+ pages and is broken into sections including Introduction and General Description, Areas of Military Importance, Offshore Conditions, Ports, Anchorages and Coastline Descriptions, Physiography, Vegetation, Rivers and Creeks, Lakes and Swamps, Defenses, Airfields and Seaplane Bases, Roads Railroads and Trails, Transport, Signal Communications, Towns Villages etc, Resources, Population, Administration, Medical Problems, and Climate and Meteorology.
The left side of the study consists of several maps attached at the end showing several different characteristics, the top map of which is marked as being provided by the “Union of Soviet Socialist Republics”. The maps include Airline Distances, Offshore Conditions, Airfields Map, Water Transportation and Overland Transportation, Water Resources, Communications Map, Movement Map, and Defenses and Installations Sector Index Map.
There is also a great set of Road Deployment Charts stapled together showing the different sectors and how accessible they are. There is a very large map of Okinawa Gunto from Japanese surveys to 1925 which was prepared by the Hydrographic Office of the U.S. Navy.
Every original photograph page is marked at the bottom right DECLASSIFIED with a date of September 19th, 1990. There are 13 of these pages total.
There are some parts torn out or tearing, but this is an outstanding invasion plan study that will fit great into any WWII collection.
