  • Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is fantastic A-2 flight jacket worn by a aerial gunner crew member aboard the B-24 "Macs Sacks" which was assigned to the Eighth Air Force, 392nd Bombardment Group, 576th Bomb Squadron during WWII.

    The 392nd Bomb Group flew B-24 Liberators out of Wendling, Norfolk from August 1943 until April 1945. They were the first Group to be given B-24H Liberators, the first B-24 model that was fitted with a nose turret on the production line, an adaptation that increasing the ability of crews to fight enemy aircraft flying head on with the bomber. The Group was awarded one Distinguished Unit Citation for bombing an aircraft and components factory at Gotha on 24 February 1944, as part of the Big Week of assaults on German aircraft targets. After the invasion of mainland Europe the Group supported the airborne invasion of Holland and assault across the Rhine by Allied paratroops.

    This A-2 jacket features some wonderful features including:
    - Hand Painted Leather 576th BS insignia patch to left chest. The insignia features a knight in armor with lance, shield and feather plume riding a bomb as if it was a horse and he was jousting.

    - Sterling Silver Air Gunner Wings

    - Hand Painted Lieutenant bars on each epaulet.

    - Reverse of jacket has exceptional hand painted art, featuring a B-24 over the 8th Air Force Insignia in blue over whips it reads "Mac's Sack" under which it reads St. Louis MO.
     
    Offered in very good condition, supple leather with original lining, with complete period correct replacement waistband and cuffs with an original CROWN zipper which functions perfectly. The manufacturer is DUBOW and this jacket retains the original data label which indicated that this is a nice large size 30.

    The 576th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) was first activated at Davis-Monthan Field, Arizona, on 26 January 1943 where it participated in the strategic bombardment campaigns of Europe and Germany as part of Eighth Air Force. Their involvement during the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge resulted in seven European-African-Middle Eastern Theater campaign streamers and one Distinguished Unit Citation. The 576th was inactivated on 13 September 1945 with the close of World War II.
