  • Original Item: One-of-a-kind. WWII U.S. Military items made by he firm of Morry Luxenberg of New York, New York are perhaps one of the most desirable makers of U.S. WWII Uniforms and Insignia. Luxemberg items were revered during the period for their absolute astounding quality and attention to detail. Luxembourg’s customers included many General officers of all branches who preferred the quality items the Luxenberg firm produced during the war. This visor cap, in lightweight khaki cotton light canvas, still has the original maker label clearly on the interior crown, under the celluloid sweat guard, which has yellowed over time:

    Luxenberg
    MILITARY & CIVILIAN TAILORS
    Breeches Makers
    NEW YORK

The sweatband is also embossed Luxenberg with their 485 Madison Avenue - New York address. There is no size label, it seems to be about a size 7 or 7 1/8. It features a desirable "wrap around" double chinstrap, which has a rear portion that can be used to make the fit of the cap slightly tighter when desired. The cap is in very good condition, with the main condition issue being the stitching on the sweatband, which has rotted out and is literally falling apart. The cap and leather are still in very good shape though, so this could most likely be easily repaired by a hatter if desired. The leather brim is in great shape, and there are just a few holes in the crown.

We checked the back of the cap eagle, and we did not see a maker name on it, but there was NEW YORK, so it is certainly original to the cap. The cap has a very relaxed look to it, but it still does retain the insignia stiffener, and an internal padded crown support, so we would not consider this a "crusher" cap in the true sense.

The cap came with a small museum tag with W.W.II written on one side, and Brig. Gen. L. Holmes Ginn Jr., who saw service during WWII and after, having been the commanding general of William Beaumont General Hospital from May 1957 to September 1958. This would also be where he passed away on December 23, 1971 at the age of 69. During WWII he became the first surgeon of the 1st Armored Division, serving with them in North Africa 1942-1943, and was later given higher level commands in Sicily and the European theater. He would also be in charge of the post WWII quarantine on the Rhine River to prevent the spread of Typhus.

We checked carefully under the sweatband with a mirror, but we were not able to find any additional markings on the cap. However it still being in the original configuration and not modified to "crusher" style would definitely be correct for a Medical officer of high rank.

A lovely example, ready to research and display!
