This is an excellent original U.S. Army WWII M1942 camouflage one-piece jungle suit, officially designated Suit, Jungle, One-Piece, constructed from reversible printed herringbone twill in the distinctive camouflage pattern commonly known today as “frogskin.” The suit retains its original internal suspenders, functional CONMAR zipper, cargo-pocket snaps, cuff hardware, and a clearly stamped 44R size marking beneath the collar.

The one-piece jungle suit was developed rapidly by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps during the summer of 1942 in response to the need for specialized clothing for operations in the tropical Pacific. The Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot completed Specification P.Q.D. No. 246 on August 18, 1942, formally designating the garment as the Suit, Jungle, One-Piece. It was declared standard issue on August 31, 1942, making it the first standardized printed camouflage uniform approved for U.S. forces during World War II.

The suit is made from the same approximately 8.5-ounce herringbone twill used for standard Army work clothing, but the fabric is printed on both sides with contrasting camouflage patterns. One side uses predominantly green tones for dense vegetation, while the reverse employs browner tones intended for drier or more open terrain. The garment was therefore conceived as a reversible camouflage suit.

The one-piece construction was intended to provide greater protection against cutting vegetation, insects, and other hazards of tropical environments. The generously cut body allowed air to circulate around the wearer, while the long front zipper could be opened quickly to aid cooling. The wrist closures and full-body construction offered greater protection when moving through heavy jungle growth.

Overall condition is very good with signs of moderate wear. Fully functional CONMAR zipper, and functional unmarked snaps. These are always hard to find as most were well used and discarded. Originally fitted with internal suspenders, which proved impractical, they were usually discarded but are present in this example. There are washed out remnants of the original tag in the right hip pocket, and there is a size stamped under the collar, 44R.

The combination of the reversible camouflage HBT construction, four large cargo pockets, functioning CONMAR zipper, surviving internal suspenders, original cuff hardware, washed-out contract label, and clearly stamped 44R size makes this a particularly strong example of the U.S. Army’s short-lived but historically important 1942 jungle-uniform program. The suit represents an early American attempt to combine camouflage, load carrying, insect protection, and tropical combat clothing into a single garment, and its brief frontline career makes surviving complete examples increasingly difficult to find.
