Item Description

Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a set of equipment as worn by a World War Two American pilot of the Army Air Force. The set includes the following items:

- Size 40 WWII US Army Air Force Summer Type A-4 Flight Suit - When the United States entered World War Two much of the military was unprepared for combat. The uniforms and equipment employed was very antiquated, most of it dated back to World War one. Advancements in the field of aviation require that the US Army Air Force develop a new line of uniforms known as flight suits. The one featured here is designed for summer wear. It was manufactured of a cotton and wool material and they were khaki in color. The design of the flight suit consisted of a khaki colored jump suit. With a zipper that secures the front shut. Additional zippers are placed at the bottom of the legs. This feature makes it easier to put on and take off the flying boots. A belt is permanently attached to the waist area. A metal buckle is provided. These were designed and put into production pre-WWII so they are well used by the Army Air Corps and the Army Air Forces. These were used by all pilots and flight crews during the war and were see in all theaters of the war. As described in the book "Gear Up," the A-4 Type suit was made of olive drab gabardine with a zipper front and belted waist. It usually had a diagonal chest pocket and an open pocket on the right shin. This suit was standardized March 18, 1930 and was used in various forms throughout WWII.

- Original U.S. WWII USAAF Pilot Type C-1 Emergency Sustenance Vest. The C1 survival vest was developed during World War two for use by the Army Airforce. The C1 vest has seen service by both Air force and navy personnel from World War Two through Korea and to a limited extent in Vietnam. The vest was made of dark olive colored green tackle twill and weighed 11 pounds when complete with survival contents. There were three large buttons on the front for closure. The vest was used alone and in conjunction with various seat and back pad survival kits which were also initially developed during World War Two. The C1 vest was designed for use in all parts of the word, however, the C1 proved better suited to the tropical and Arctic regions. The C1 was issued in one size but was adjustable through three ties at the back and was intended to be worn under the mae west life vest, body armor and the parachute harness, but over the uniform and A2 leather jacket. This however, proved to be too cumbersome when worn in some theaters of operation when all the survival equipment was carried so a modified musette bag that attached to the parachute harness upon bailout was developed. After landing, the crew member could then remove and wear the vest.

- WWII U.S. FLYING GOGGLE A.A.F. TYPE B-8 by POLAROID, with a very nice clear lens. The rubber surrounds are still quite supple, and the chamois backing is fully intact and does not have any major damage, just wear and some light staining. The strap is in great shape. Also included is the original box.

- WWII USAAF Khaki Summer weight flight helmet type AN-H-15 made by BRADLEY-GOODRICH CO.. Size MEDIUM offered in very good condition. The helmet does not appear to have been worked much, if at all. Chin strap is intact and excellent.

- Original U.S. WWII USAAF Mae West Pneumatic Life Vest with Dye Marker - Dated May 30, 1945
