Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very rare official Navy propaganda poster that depicts a stereotype Japanese soldier, your enemy the Jap. It lists the achievements of the Japanese military to try and urge American sailors to fight harder. The cartoon's almost comic-like appearance made it more appealing to soldiers during wartime. The poster measures about 18” x 23 ½". The artist was Hotchkiss, USNR.
“The Jap is a fanatical fighter. His motto is "win or die". There are 4,000,000 of him under arms, with 2,000,000 more ready if needed. We have not yet met the main body of this huge tough army!” This poster also insinuates Japan’s control over 400,000,000 enslaved people.
The poster is in great shape with few flaws. The folds and creases are still visible but add to the character of the poster. There are tears on the top and on the sides as shown. The bottom reads U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE: 1944 O-615176 OFFICIAL NAVY POSTER, INDUSTRIAL INCENTIVE DIVISION, JAP-80M. This is a fantastic poster that will fit well in any U.S. WWII or propaganda poster collection.
The Government tried to identify the most effective poster style. One government-commissioned study concluded that the best posters were those that made a direct, emotional appeal and presented realistic pictures in photographic detail. The study found that symbolic or humorous posters attracted less attention, made a less favorable impression, and did not inspire enthusiasm. Nevertheless, many symbolic and humorous posters were judged to be outstanding in national poster competitions during the war.
