Original Item. Only One Available. This is an unusual American WWII-era anti-Axis political novelty, commonly known as “Der Phew-er,” depicting AH as a skunk. Made from painted cast iron, the figure combines the German dictator's recognizable facial features with the body of a skunk, complete with an exaggerated upright tail. The design was intended as a humorous insult to the German leader and his Axis allies.
The figure retains its predominantly black painted finish, with a pale flesh-colored face, black side-parted hair, distinctive mustache, and traces of red paint on the lips. The large raised tail bears worn lettering referring to Mussolini and Hirohito, accompanied by an arrow pointing toward the skunk's hindquarters. Although portions of the lettering have become difficult to distinguish, the overall design remains recognizable.
Condition is good overall, with considerable age and handling wear. There is extensive chipping and abrasion to the painted finish, particularly across the face, tail, and feet, exposing areas of the underlying metal. The facial paint shows scattered losses and surface deterioration, while the black finish has developed an uneven, aged appearance with localized rust-colored oxidation. The raised inscriptions are worn but retain identifiable lettering, and the figure preserves its distinctive form and facial features.
Historical Context
During WWII, political caricatures became a familiar part of American popular culture. Cartoonists, manufacturers, and commercial novelty companies frequently ridiculed the Axis leadership through exaggerated portraits and humorous objects. These products circulated among civilians as expressions of wartime sentiment, bringing political satire into everyday homes and workplaces.
The “Der Phew-er” figure belongs to this tradition of wartime novelty manufacturing and has been associated with Johnson Smith & Co. of Detroit, Michigan, a well-established American mail-order company specializing in practical jokes, unusual merchandise, and inexpensive novelties. The company distributed extensive illustrated catalogs containing thousands of products, including humorous objects intended to amuse and entertain American consumers.
The name “Der Phew-er” was itself a deliberate play on the German title Der Führer, meaning “The Leader.” In English, “phew” is an expression commonly associated with an unpleasant smell. Combined with the skunk's natural reputation for producing a powerful odor, the name turned the German dictator's political title into an insulting joke. The animal's exaggerated posture reinforced the intended humor, making the message understandable without additional explanation.
The inclusion of the Italian and Japanese leaders refers to the political and military alliance formalized on September 27, 1940, when Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact in Berlin. The agreement established their cooperation in Europe and East Asia and committed the signatories to mutual assistance under specified circumstances.
Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the declarations of war that followed, the United States entered into direct conflict with all three principal Axis powers. AH, Benito Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito consequently became familiar subjects of American wartime cartoons and other satirical material. Artists frequently exaggerated their physical characteristics or placed them in deliberately humiliating situations, using ridicule to undermine their public image.
Commercial political novelties formed part of this broader wartime culture. Small cast-metal figures could be kept as ornaments, desk accessories, or humorous paperweights. Their appeal came from the combination of recognizable personalities and straightforward visual jokes, allowing ordinary Americans to express their views through objects intended for personal use rather than official propaganda campaigns.
