Original Item. Only One Available. This is a seldom-seen original U.S. WWII VS 9/G signaling panel, a highly visible fabric ground marker associated with airborne and aviation operations. Panels of this type were used to provide visual identification and orientation for aircraft approaching designated landing areas, drop zones, and supply points, making them especially relevant to paratrooper and Pathfinder operations.
This example is marked on the outer canvas:
PANEL VS 9/G
RED
The interior retains the instructions for use and warnings. The snap connecting the two small ends is nearly broken away from the canvas so please exercise caution when handling this set. The interior material appears more pink than red, though this may be a result of age toning.
A very interesting piece of equipment that we have not offered before. When all closed up, it measures roughly 34 ½” long.
VS-series panels were designed to be quickly deployed on the ground where their strong color contrast could be seen from the air. In airborne operations, such panels could assist Pathfinders and ground personnel in marking landing or drop areas and giving incoming aircraft a clear visual reference.
The combination of the PANEL VS 9/G marking, RED designation, surviving interior instructions, original folding construction, and strong association with WWII airborne and aviation signaling makes this a particularly interesting piece of field equipment. The faded color and fragile snap attachment are the principal condition issues, while the surviving markings and instruction panel remain the most important original features.
