Item Description
Original Group. One-of-a-Kind. This is a great WWII uniform grouping for a pilot who served with the 8th Air Command in England during World War II, and in the 15th Air Force. His Aviator kit bag is named to another combat-torn aviator, making this a great research project.
The aviator kit bag is named to a sergeant in the 8th Air Command, Claude Dibler, who completed a number of missions over enemy territory as a waist gunner and armored engineer with the crew of a B-17 bomber. It's likely bags were traded or reissued nearby and it was the bag the Captain took home.
The grouping includes:
Captain's uniform jacket with his pilot’s pin back wings marked Sterling, Captain’s bars on his shoulders, an 8th Air Command patch on his left shoulder, a 15th Air Force patch on his right shoulder, 3 overseas stripes on his left cuff, a Presidential Unit Citation with one OLC above his right breast pocket, and a 3 place ribbon bar above his left breast pocket with the European-African-Middle Eastern campaign medal with five campaign stars, an American Campaign medal, and the U.S. WWII Victory Medal. He also has U.S. & Air Corps collar insignia. The coat has a size tag for 38L.
Pilot's officer’s hat, tan. Size tag for 7 ¼. Made by Harry Suffrin Inc. in Detroit, Michigan. Great shape overall. Could provide clue to where pilot was from.
Very darling little wooden Air Corps cigarette case with a propeller shaped lid that turns to reveal ten small slots for cigarettes. With a gorgeous Air Corps insignia on the front. Measures 3¼ x 5⅛ x ½”.
Dibler’s Aviator’s kit bag with his name C. J. DIBLER and his serial number 32935382, stamped on. Great addition.
A great grouping to a combat-torn pilot with the added bonus of a waist gunner & armored engineer with the crew of a B-17 bomber. Comes ready for further research and display!
