Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is a great WWII Silver Star Medal grouping engraved to Sergeant Walter J. Sedlowski, Company L, 71st Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division. The group consists of engraved Silver Star Medal and Good Conduct Medal, with two campaign medals and a CBI. There is also a copy of the original citation.
The citation reads:
“Sergeant. WALTER J. SEDLOWSKI, 33 438 112, Company L, 71st Infantry. For gallantry in action on 29 April 1945 in the vicinity of Fussen, Germany. When informed by a civilian of an enemy patrol in ambush, Sergeant Sedlowski detailed a tank and a half-track to guard a strategically important bridge while he and four squad members neared the hostile position. At a point 100 yards from the enemy, he ordered his squad to support his advance. In the ensuing firefight, he killed one, wounded another, and took four prisoners. Sergeant Sodlowski's courageous action is worthy of high praise. Entered military service from Ambridge. Pennsylvania.”
The Silver Star Medal and Good Conduct Medal are both engraved WALTER J. SEDLOWSKI. Also included are an American Campaign Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three campaign stars. There is also a Combat Infantryman Badge, marked 61 on the back.

In World War II, the 71st, consisting of three battalions, was part of the 44th Infantry Division, which assembled at Fort Lewis, Washington. Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion was detached to take part in the retaking of Attu Island in the Aleutian campaign. The 102d Engr Bn (CBT) also had its Company C serving in the Pacific Campaign.
In this offensive, the 71st encountered the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division Götz von Berlichingen, holding off eight attacks. The Second Battalion and I Company of the Third Battalion were both awarded Presidential Unit Citations. In the last days of the war, the First Battalion crossed the Austrian border through a mountain pass and attacked a German division.
