Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original WWII-era patch for the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, one of the most famous independent U.S. airborne regiments to fight in the Pacific Theater. The design depicts the regiment’s distinctive “Wildcat” mascot descending beneath a parachute.
This example is believed to be U.S.-made and measures approximately 3 inches in diameter. The embroidery remains strong and the overall design is still clearly defined.
The 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment served independently in the Pacific rather than as part of one of the better-known airborne divisions fighting in Europe. The regiment earned a formidable combat reputation during campaigns in the Southwest Pacific, including operations in New Guinea, the Philippines, and on Corregidor.
The 503rd is especially remembered for its airborne assault on Corregidor in February 1945, when paratroopers jumped directly onto the heavily fortified island at the entrance to Manila Bay. The drop zones were extremely small and surrounded by cliffs, wreckage, and defensive positions, making the operation one of the most hazardous airborne assaults of WWII. The regiment helped recapture the island from Japanese forces after several days of intense fighting.
The “Wildcat” became closely associated with the regiment and appeared on unit insignia and other wartime items. The combination of airborne imagery and the aggressive wildcat motif made it one of the more distinctive unofficial unit designs used by U.S. paratroopers in the Pacific.
Condition is very good overall. There is minor fraying around the outer edge. The reverse shows heavier thread loss, with a substantial amount of loose and bunched thread remaining on the back. We examined the patch under blacklight and observed no fluorescence, which is consistent with period materials, although blacklight testing alone should not be considered definitive proof of age.
A very attractive and difficult-to-find piece of WWII Pacific Airborne insignia associated with the hard-fighting 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment.
