Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent original U.S. WWII War Bond poster featuring the dramatic “Back the Attack! Buy War Bonds” artwork by noted artist George Schreiber. Printed in 1943 by the U.S. Government Printing Office for the Treasury Department’s War Savings Staff, the image depicts an American infantryman taking cover with his rifle while airborne troops descend by parachute behind him, connecting the fighting overseas directly with the financial support expected from Americans at home. This example measures approximately 20 x 28” and retains excellent color with its original distribution folds still clearly visible.
This 20" x 28" World War Two War Bonds poster was designed in the early 1940s by the Artist George Schreiber (1904-1977) and printed by the U. S. Government Printing Office with designation number 1943-O-537864. It reads:
Back the Attack!
BUY WAR BONDS
Born in Brussels, Belgium, George Schreiber traveled and studied extensively until finally arriving in the United States in 1928. Schreiber had two passions- first being an American citizen and second informing people of the war-torn horrors he had witnessed in Europe. He traveled extensively to all 48 states, everywhere displaying his paintings, lithographs and illustrations from his homeland. During World War II, the United States Navy commissioned Schreiber to create paintings to use as posters. He was often criticized by fellow artists for this career move. But Schreiber saw it as an opportunity to bring his art to great numbers of people, spreading important messages.
An unrestored totally original poster with a very clean overall appearance. It has minor signs of use, such as slight edge and fold wear, and the original fold creases. The Poster has been folded, as it was originally for mailing to various government locations around the country. Offered in excellent condition with great color retention. This poster will ship folded.
With its George Schreiber artwork, 1943 Government Printing Office designation, strong “Back the Attack!” slogan, Third War Loan association, unrestored condition, original mailing folds, and excellent surviving color, this is a particularly strong example of American WWII financial propaganda. It would make an excellent framed display for a collection devoted to U.S. wartime posters, War Bonds, airborne imagery, or American military artwork.
