Original U.S. WWII 1st Division Silver Star Recipient Uniform Grouping - Lieutenant Harvey A. Hanna

Item Description

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Grouping. This is the lovely uniform grouping of 1st Lieutenant Harvey A. Hanna, Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Hanna was awarded the Silver Star for actions on January 15th, 1945. The group includes his officer’s uniform, his garrison cap, and three of his medals in presentation cases.

Hanna’s Silver Star Citation reads:

HARVEY A. HANNA, O1325217, FIRST LIEUTENANT, Company B, 16th Infantry. For gallantry in action in the vicinity of Faymonville, Belgium, 15 January 1945. When the advance of his assault platoon was impeded by an intensive automatic weapons barrage, Lieutenant Hanna quickly reorganized the group and, with utter disregard for personal safety, led a patrol to a strategic position on the enemy’s flank. Then, surprising the entrenched foe, he directed accurate rifle fire into the emplacements, silencing hostile machine guns and inflicting severe casualties. Lieutenant Hanna’s gallant actions and exemplary leadership exemplify the finest traditions of the service.
GO. No. 155, Hq 1st US Inf Div, 13 August 1945.

This great group includes:
- Hanna’s officer’s uniform jacket with a 1st Division patch on the right sleeve, with no patch on the left sleeve, although it appears there was one at one point. There are five bullion overseas stripes on the left cuff, a French fourragère cord on the left shoulder, and a Belgian Croix de Guerre cord on the right shoulder. The Belgian cord is broken and could use a stitch repair. There are US & Infantry collar insignia, 1st Lieutenant bars on each shoulder board, with a Distinguished insignia for the 16th Infantry Regiment next to each. Above the right breast pocket is a Presidential Unit Citation with a frame and two oak leaf clusters, and above the left breast pocket is a gorgeous bullion Combat Infantryman badge sewn on, and under this is a tremendous sewn-in 8-place ribbon bar with the Silver Star Medal with an OLC, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the American Defense Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five campaign stars, the Asiatic Campaign medal with one campaign star, the American Campaign medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. There is a tag on the interior for Rogers Peet Co. of New York & Boston. The tag reads Lt. HANNA, H.A. / O-1325217 / Size 39L. The belt is retained but not on the uniform.
- Hanna’s garrison cap with a 1st Lieutenant bar, black & gold piping, marked Size 7 inside. Made by Devonshire in Texas.
- Hanna’s officer shirt by Dunner,
- Hanna’s Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and Bronze Star Medal in their original presentation cases. None of the medals are engraved. The BS & SS retain their ribbon and pins.

His marriage notice in the newspaper notes that he wears the Silver Star with cluster, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Asiatic Campaign Medal with one star, the European Theater Medal with 5 stars, and that he served throughout the European campaign with the First Division. His wife, Onnolee McBryar, served in the WAVES program in Washington, D.C. as a Yeoman 2nd Class for two years.
