Original U.S. WWII 1944 Anti-Axis “Sweeping Up The Axis” 5th War Loan Poster by John Atherton - 14 ½” x 20"

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. During WWII, the US Government tried to identify the most effective poster style. One government-commissioned study concluded that the best posters were those that made a direct, emotional appeal and presented realistic pictures in photographic detail. The study found that symbolic or humorous posters attracted less attention, made a less favorable impression, and did not inspire enthusiasm. Nevertheless, many symbolic and humorous posters were judged to be outstanding in national poster competitions during the war.

War posters that are symbolic do not attract a great deal of attention, and they fail to arouse enthusiasm. Often, they are misunderstood by those who see them.

This poster is a great example of a realistic image that made a direct emotional appeal to the general public. The poster is symbolic in nature and displays an image that would not be misunderstood.

This is an absolutely stunning WWII U.S. Anti-Axis Propaganda Poster measuring 14.25 " x 20". The poster is in lovely condition, save from the original folds from when the poster was originally shipped. Unfortunately there are quite a few holes in the corners made by various types of pins and nails.

"5th War Loan," printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office, dated 1944. Poster features a broom labeled "Extra War Bonds" sweeping away ripped German and Japanese flags, as well as a broken Japanese katana and a bullet-riddled German helmet. The identifying numbers at the bottom of the poster are WFD 911 and O-581632. It also notes that it is an official U.S. Treasury Poster.

A wonderful poster that comes ready for display.
